P80 vs G80: How the Polymer80 Frame and G80 Compare
For years, the Polymer80 frame was the go-to way to build a GLOCK®-compatible pistol at home. Polymer80 closed in 2024, and the platform we carry today is the G80, made by Defense Distributed. If you own a P80, or you’re deciding what to build next, here’s how the two compare and which of your parts carry over.

What’s Different
A Steel Receiver Instead of a Polymer Frame

On a P80, the whole frame is the 80% part: grip, trigger guard, rails and all. The G80 splits that job in two. The G80 Unfinished Receiver is a steel fire control unit, with the locking block, trigger housing and slide rails machined from a single piece of heat-treated 4140 steel. That’s the part you finish. It then drops into a polymer grip module and pins in place.
Steel also brings real advantages: a tighter slide-to-frame fit, zero flex under recoil, virtually unlimited service life and compatibility with high-round-count training regimens. The one-piece design eliminates the rail alignment issues common with multi-piece polymer frames.
No Separate Locking Block or Rear Rail
A P80 uses a separate locking block rail system and rear rail module that are pinned into the polymer frame. On the G80, those features are part of the steel receiver, so there are fewer parts to line up, and the slide rides on steel. The receiver also has an integrated slide lock and a captive trigger housing, and it comes with the pins and slide lock spring you need.
Swappable Grip Modules
A P80’s grip shape was set by the model you bought. The G80 uses grip modules built to the 120R standard, so the receiver isn’t tied to one grip.

The G80 Grip Module gives you smooth GLOCK® 19 Gen 3 ergonomics in a holster-ready profile. It runs GLOCK® 19, 23 and 32 magazines (9mm, .40 S&W and .357 SIG) and the Magpul PMAG 19 GL9. It’s compact, made in the USA and has a Picatinny-style accessory rail. It’s compatible with GLOCK® G19, G23 and G32 Gen 3 slide assemblies, standard GLOCK® Gen 3 lower parts kits and GLOCK® Gen 3 – Gen 5 magazines.
Prefer something more aggressive? The Matador Arms G80 Grip Module trades the smooth G19 profile for faceted texture over a matte stipple on the side panels, front strap and backstrap, plus a high beavertail, a deeply undercut trigger guard and an integrated flared magwell that lets your firing hand sit higher. It uses the same 120R drop-in receiver fit and has the same GLOCK® slide, lower parts kit and magazine compatibility.
One Size, For Now
Polymer80 made frames for several GLOCK® sizes, from the single-stack PF9SS (G43) to the full-size PF940V2 (G17) and the PF45 (G20/G21SF). The G80 is a compact, GLOCK® 19-size platform. If your P80 build is a G19-size PF940C, the G80 is a direct replacement. For other sizes, see our 80% Frame Compatibility Guide.
What Carries Over From Your P80 Build
Both platforms are built around Gen 3 GLOCK® parts, so a lot of what you already own works on a G80:
- Glock-compatible slides and complete slide kits (G19, G23 and G32 Gen 3 slide assemblies; G19-length for the G80)
- GLOCK® lower parts (except the trigger pin, trigger housing pin and slide lock spring, which come with the G80 receiver)
- Barrels, sights and other slide parts
- GLOCK® Gen 3 – Gen 5 magazines (G19-pattern)
What doesn’t carry over: the P80’s locking block rail system, rear rail module and frame pins. The G80 receiver replaces them. The G80 also includes its own trigger pin, trigger housing pin and slide lock spring, which replace the corresponding parts from a standard GLOCK® lower parts kit.
Which Should You Build?
If you already have a finished P80, keep shooting it. Gen 3 parts are still easy to find, and everything above still fits.
If you’re starting a new GLOCK®-compatible build, the G80 is the platform to choose: Polymer80 frames are no longer made, and the G80 adds a steel receiver and swappable grips.

A Note on the Law
Federal rules for frames and receivers changed in 2022, and the U.S. Supreme Court upheld ATF’s rule in Bondi v. VanDerStok on March 26, 2025. Defense Distributed says it designed the G80 after that decision. State and local laws vary and change often, and some states restrict or ban these products. Check the laws where you live before you buy, and see our Shipping & Returns page for the places we can’t ship to.
